Blurb:
Ambition. Sorcery. Treason. How far will one woman dare to go?1420. Eleanor Cobham arrives at the court of Henry V. Pretty but not highborn, she hopes for little more than to marry well.
England is in a golden age – but beneath the glittering surface, ancient rivalries fester and chaos lurks in the shadows.
And chaos, Eleanor discovers, creates opportunities. Appointed lady-in-waiting to a Countess who commands her own army, she begins to see what a woman can truly become.
She dares to dream of real power. Perhaps even the crown itself. But for that, she must turn to darker arts. And the higher she climbs, the darker the path becomes…
My thoughts:
Fully immersive, with so many historical details and so much research that it transports you into the game of scheming, political intrigue, and the turbulent paths of three women in a time when women are feared and silenced.
I loved all the accurate historical details, and it shows how much research was woven into this lush story, which makes it even more immersive and emotional for me every step of the way.
The thing I loved most is the way she crafted Eleanor's character. Although you don't like her because of some of her traits, you can relate to her and her desire to become someone and be influential and powerful.
You may not agree with her methods, but you can relate because of her character’s journey and the anger and resentment she piled up in her soul along the way.
Such a complex character is really hard to bring to life, and the way she did so evoked so many mixed emotions in me throughout that journey.
An intriguing story set in complex times, with England as its backdrop. I really love that I picked up this book.
