Blurb:

Elegy Ahn did not ask for destiny to find her.

She is happy with her life as a soldier, defending her small country from the Talusar, a powerful nation who worships a deadly Fever. A fever that blesses half of its victims with mysterious gifts.

But then she’s summoned to hear a prophecy–her, and the most ruthless of Talusar generals, Rava Vidar. Brought face to face, they learn that one of them will lead their people to victory over the other…but they don’t know which. And at the center of both of their fates: a man. A man that, Elegy is told, she will fall in love with.

In just one day, Elegy’s old life–her job, her purpose, and her future–is over. She and Rava are destined to collide, with the fate of their nations hanging in the balance. And when they do, only one will be left standing.

Elegy intends to make sure it’s her.

My thoughts:

Seek the Traitor's Son is my first encounter with Veronica Roth's work, so I dove in blindly, as I had been hearing much praise for the Divergent series. It's a sci-fi series full of political tension and scheming, unravelling a prophecy that could potentially save Elegy’s people. It begins slowly, laying a solid foundation that will later serve as a rich depth to the story and the characters' emotions and growth. I was in awe of Elegy and Theren's development and the transformations they underwent on their journey, and how my perception of them shifted effortlessly along with it. Moreover, the romance between them had such maturity, without any grand proclamations or pompous fanfare, but rather a quiet, healing presence supported by actions and mutual understanding, fully embracing each other's traumatic pasts. Their few words together carry the weight and intensity of a nuclear reactor, holding your emotions hostage. The perspectives of Elegy, Hela, and Theren fit together perfectly like pieces of a puzzle, providing just the right amount of information, emotion, and insight into what drives their actions and why they behave as they do. The complex relationship between Theren and his mother, along with the touching sisterly bond—despite not being related by blood—between Elegy and Hela, stand out to me with their intricate nuances. I only wish, as a personal preference, that the last three or four chapters had been a bit slower and longer, so the significance of Elegy’s moment could have made a deeper impact and heightened the tension. I loved every moment of this journey, and although we unravelled a lot of questions along the way, after that ending, I am way too curious to see what comes next!
