Blurb:
In One Brief Moment All Eternity is an astonishing new novel by the bestselling, prize-winning novelist Elif Shafak. Spanning decades and continents, from revolutionary 19th century France to Istanbul, Egypt and Beirut, it is a profound meditation on creativity in times of political crisis and war, asking what literature can hope to offer when the world feels broken. Building a fascinating bridge between Western prose and Eastern poetry, this story offers a luminous portrait of the life of an iconic writer, Gustave Flaubert, author of Madame Bovary, told through the lives of the women – both real and fictional – who shaped him.
My thoughts:
I'm in awe of the research, care, and time that went into this amazing story.
Her writing style, as always, is so alluring that it grabs you by the hand, and when the words start to pour, you're captivated both mentally and emotionally to the fullest.
The story is about the famous author Gustave Flaubert and his intricate journey of creativity and writing. All of that is told through the POVs of every female character in his life, which gives it a really unique feeling, combined with her lush prose.
I loved how this book is an absolute love letter not only to books and writing but also to creativity in general.
How taxing it can sometimes be on the soul and mind to bring a book into this world, and the constant battle with the surrounding reality that pushes you into one mould or another that you have to fit into.
As I said, it's made with such gentleness and care, but at the same time, it covers deep topics beautifully.
Reading it was a balm for the soul, and I'm not one to reread books, but I will definitely do it with this one! So many things stay with you ❤️
